Rail Topographic Surveys

Topographic Surveys on rail infrastructure can be carried out using terrestrial or mobile mapping techniques depending on the output and accuracy requirements.

Terrestrial techniques such as Total Station combined with a Rail Shoe are often applied for high accuracy surveys of the rail, GNSS is often utilised for embankments and soft detail and laser scanning utilised for bridges, structures, platforms and station detail.

Rail Mobile Mapping

Mobile Mapping is generally applied to large scale projects. Mobile Mapping platform can be mounted to a train to allow for survey at commuter speeds where minimal disruption is the priority or alternatively mounted to a customised rail vehicle which can be driven at a slower pace to maximize data coverage.

Rail Underground Utility Surveys

Underground Utility Surveys are carried out to PAS:128 standard using a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar, Radiodetection and other specialist techniques. Services in carparks, verges and on platform may be possible to map during normal operational hours, whereas services beneath the track are mostly mapped at night using manual or cart mounted GPR.

The most common PAS:128 standard type for rail environments is Survey Type B – Detection which requires utilities to be detected, traced and mapped using one or more geophysical techniques.

Rail Gauge Surveys

LIDAR and gauge measurement technology is mounted to a rail trolley and manually operated by surveyors on site to survey the gauge, alignment and position of the rail simultaneously under a single pass. These works are often carried out at night under a rail possession.

Monitoring

Rail Monitoring can be carried out by fixing monitoring points or reflective targets to the rail and observing measurements to the targets utilising high-precision Total Station.

Monitoring can be carried out manually with surveyors visiting the site at determined intervals or remotely with instrumentation installed on site which is programmed to observe measurements at the required intervals without the requirement for surveyors on site.

Real-time data viewing can facilitate instant trigger alerts, which can be transmitted to servers, computers, mobile phones, or other devices.

Measured Building Surveys and BIM

Interior and exterior data at stations and other buildings is captured in the field utilising Laser Scanning technology due to its accuracy and efficiency.

Data collected from the laser scanner contains millions of precise points which allows for multiple output formats such as BIM Models, Site Plan, Elevation, Floor Plans, Roof Plans and Section and inclusion of the most intricate of detail.
