Scope

Rail Survey, Gauge Survey, Topographic Survey and Underground Utility Survey package commissioned by Irish Rail for proposed works including per way track interventions, proposed new train stations, proposed new depot location and Electrification as part of the Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme.

The works area covered various locations from Mallow to Cobh & Midelton totalling an approximate area of 865,000m2.

Key Activities

  • The survey was divided into 15 survey packages which were located along the Mallow to Cobh and Midelton lines, and mainly focused at the stations and approaches to the stations.

  • Rail and Gauge Survey was carried out using specialist rail mobile mapping platform equipped with laser scanning and gauge measurement sensors.

  • Services along the edge of the track, embankments, fences and other features were also surveyed and included on the rail drawing.

  • Bridge faces were surveyed and delivered as Elevation drawings.

  • Cable ways and other railway services were surveyed to provide the type & location of the signalling and telecoms cable infrastructure.

  • Rail Surveys were carried out at night under Irish Rail supervision and required strong coordination to minimise downtime due to passing trains, stationary trains and to ensure the operations of the rail were not disrupted.

  • Topographic Survey and Underground Utility Survey was focused at the station platforms, carparks and surrounding roads. Topographic features included station building footprint, edge of platform, kerbs, walls, fences, street furniture, services, spot heights, road levels and other above ground features. Underground Utility Survey included foul, storm, electrics, telecom, gas, watermain and other subsurface infrastructure.

  • Surveys on public roads required implementation of Traffic MGMT as per Chapter 8.

  • Survey delivered in AutoCAD 2D and 3D formats, along with gauge reports and underground utility manhole cards.
